? High Bridge Arms (415)643-9255 3185 Mission St, San Francisco SJGE is an abbreviation for "San Jose Gun Exchange", my favorite gun store in the bay area (partly because it is right along my commute). I'll mark the ones that have lots of stock with "*" the old Reed's would have had three stars. The following is my personal list of bay area gun stores (for some definition of "bay area", I ignore Marin and east bay). A new gun store has opened on El Camino in Mountain View (the Bay Area Gun Vault), and another store in San Jose (the SJ gun exchange on Almaden Expwy) has reopened, so I think we're doing fine.Ĭlick to expand.No. We still have about a dozen gun stores in the urban part of the bay area, about two dozen if you go about an hour into the rural areas nearby, so the loss of 1/2 of a gunstore is not a disaster. As is usual with the very fractured gun community, there were nasty rumors around (some deliberately spread by employees of competing gun stores), but these rumors are simply nonsense: Reed's was NOT shut down by the ATF or the CA DoJ they just couldn't make enough money. ![]() The bicycle side of the business wasn't making much money either (not clear to me whether that was a general industry trend or their incompetence, I'm not a bicycle person). The reasons for that are completely boring: They couldn't afford the rent, and kept losing money. The old Reed's main strength was that they had lots of stuff in stock, so you could fondle the guns, and get an idea of what you were buying that has been sadly lost. Some of the staff ended up at other good gunstores (for example at Sportsmen's on Camden in Campbell). ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, that space is smaller, so there is less stuff there, and about half the staff was let go. As already said, the gun sales counter moved to the indoor range location.
